Some experimental challenges cannot be solved using off-the-shelf components.  We are here to help you build bespoke components or complete custom solutions.  We take the time to understand the research need; and apply engineering to the science.

At Cairn we have a dedicated design and R&D team using industry standard mechanical, electronic and optical CAD software and complimented by our own machine workshop with the latest CNC and 3D printing equipment. Our multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers are dedicated to product design and development in the fluorescence microscopy field. Please see portfolio below.

Custom TIRF Interlock Unit

A researcher carrying out experiments, using a system bought from Cairn, needed a laser/TIRF safety interlock for their Nikon stage.

We liaised with Nikon to obtain the CAD drawing of our customers stage and modified Cairn’s standard TIRF interlock unit to suit.

OptoScan With OptoSpin

A researcher who purchased one of our Optoscan units needed the addition of various filters for their experiments.

We fitted a custom optical relay and Optospin mounting cartridge to the output port of the Optoscan. This gave our customer the full functionality of our filterwheel without compromising the Optoscan.

Macro Illuminator

A researcher needed the flexibility of an open frame Macro rig for their experiments.

We developed this for use with the macro imaging rig. It’s a large field illuminator, with our standard Optomask unit, which allows cropping to avoid stray/unwanted light.

Ilas Combiner Box

A researcher needed the addition of a widefield light source and iris to crop stray light to add extra functionality to their ILas TIRF illuminator

We designed this unit to fit directly to the ILas product with a side port for widefield illumination. It uses an adjustable mirror that can be moved out of the path using a control on the lid for when the...

CoolLED To Olympus Coupling

A researcher needed to use their CoolLED light source on an Olympus IX71 microscope.

As the Olympus IX71 is a discontinued model, the epi-illuminator is no longer available to purchase. To help bring this microscope back to life, we modified our own Olympus IX71 epi-illuminator to include a direct attachment for their CoolLED light...

Lite Microscope

A researcher wanted to add photoactivation and two camera detection to a microscope system with differential magnification between the cameras and with a specialist extra long working distance objective.

To make the system compact, optically efficient and to avoid vignetting we worked with the integrator to supply a large format TwinCam in primary image space. By communicating closely with the system integrator we were able to produce a cost...
