Some experimental challenges cannot be solved using off-the-shelf components.  We are here to help you build bespoke components or complete custom solutions.  We take the time to understand the research need; and apply engineering to the science.

At Cairn we have a dedicated design and R&D team using industry standard mechanical, electronic and optical CAD software and complimented by our own machine workshop with the latest CNC and 3D printing equipment. Our multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers are dedicated to product design and development in the fluorescence microscopy field. Please see portfolio below.

Nikon Lamphouse – TE200 Direct EPI Coupling

A researcher needed to fit a Nikon Lamphouse to the EPI port of their discontinued TE200 microscope.

We are often asked to make custom couplings for discontinued microscopes where spare parts are no longer available. In this case we had to remake the official Nikon adapter to suit our own direct coupling without losing any functionality.

Dual Infinity Cube

A researcher was using the Olympus UDP EPI layer on their BX51 microscope. They needed to bring in a laser system mounted on an AV table, of which the height could not be adjusted. They also needed this line to use a separate olympus filter cube with tip/tilt adjust.

We took inspiration from our current Infinity Cube product and came up with the Dual Cube version. The Dual Infinity Cube has tip/tilt adjust on 2 individual filter cubes (these can be either Olympus or Nikon) with a bypass position....

Infinity Cube With Slider And Safety Interlock

A researcher needed additional filter positions for their Infinity cube and a laser safety interlock cover.

We modified the standard Infinity Cube to incorporate a 4 position filter slider with a hall effect sensor on the removable filter cube cover. This is now available as an upgrade to the Infinity Cube as we had several other...

Dual Beam Expander

A researcher had a requirement for a device that could take a collimated beam from a laser and switch between full field illumination and a focused spot.

We designed a device that has xy adjustment on 2 separate drop in lens holders, with the full field lens also having Z adjustment for calibration. This device has become part of our standard product family as demand was so...

TwinCam With Integrated OptoSpin

A researcher needed the functionality of our OptoSpin Filter Wheel on the reflected port of their TwinCam.

We designed a coupling that allows the integration of the Cairn OptoSpin, as a retro upgrade. This is now available as an option to our standard TwinCam.

Hybrid Invert/Upright Olympus Microscope

A researcher approached us with the crazy idea of combining an upright Olympus microscope with an Invert IX70.

After lots of head scratching we managed to solve the various pitfalls and came up with a solution that our customer is very happy with. We have since completed 2 other similar orders.

Emission Relay Device

A researcher needed to add a specialised filter wheel to their microscope sideport without compromising the parfocality.

We used our own custom design lens sets to make a camera relay device with enough infinity space to incorporate the filter wheel and be suitable for large sensor cameras. This has proved so popular that it’s now available as...

Lucia (custom) Faraday Cage

A researcher had a Newport VIS30/36 table (950mm x 750mm) and needed an electrically quiet enclosure for their electrophysiology experiments.

We modified our existing Lucia product to suit the Newport AV table. For electrophysiology requirements, an additional tri-metalic layer (Cu/Ni/Ag) was integrated into the fabric to block electromagnetic radiation over a wide range of frequencies offering a dual purpose light-shielding...
