CANCELLATION OF PLYMOUTH ADVANCED MICROSCOPY COURSE - IS BREXIT BEGINNING TO BITE?

Yes the sad news is that the advanced microscopy course that was due to take place in Plymouth this spring has had to be cancelled because of a collapse in the number of applications.  This course had been running for nearly 20 years, was regularly well oversubscribed, and had been particularly popular with students from the EU.  However, that is where the primary collapse in numbers had occurred this time.  While we are of course very disappointed about this, it should on the other hand, given the messages that the UK government is putting out about Brexit, be unsurprising to the point of inevitability.  Such a shame!

Let’s hope that the autumn Cell Physiology Workshop, now in its 37th year, will be able to better weather this particular storm.  As the poster shows, applications are now open!  This course has always been particularly well oversubscribed, and is still pretty much unique in terms of what it offers, so it may be correspondingly better placed to survive in these crazy times.

We try not to “do” politics in Cairn, but Martin our founder and Chairman, who is also the author of this sad little piece, is nevertheless currently grinning from ear to ear, as he has just found the birth certificate of his Irish grandmother, which entitles him to Irish citizenship and hence continuing personal citizenship of the EU.  In that personal capacity he therefore hopes that the rest of the UK will be able to rejoin him one day!  But meanwhile, if this announcement is a taste of things to come, we could well be in for some interesting times….
