Ultra Stable High Intensity Short Arc Lamp
Arc Light Sources
Cairn xenon, mercury, and mixed-gas arc light sources offer ultra-high stability, high intensity illumination. The extreme point intensity and broad spectrum make them particularly suitable for fluorescence microscopy, but the modular design and wide range of couplings ensures that they can be equally effective for other purposes.
Available in two basic configurations, the original Classic and the higher output Optosource, both models are configured to produce high intensity focussed light for coupling either to the input slit of a monochromator, or directly into a light guide. Derivations of the basic design include versions with parabolic reflectors for producing a collimated output beam and auxiliary condenser lens optics to aid uniformity. A recent introduction is a variable power option, complimenting the ultra-high stability of the original design with the flexibility of two user defined power settings and real time switching between these two levels.
Applications
Features
  • Ultra-high stability power supply and lamphouse design with external thermistor-controlled fan for critical applications
  • Dual level power supply with remote real time switching
  • Choice of high point intensity 75 Watt or 150 Watt Xenon; 100 Watt Mercury or mixed Xenon / MercuryPhotometry and lamps
  • Ellipsoidal reflectors for high light-gathering efficiency without spherical or chromatic aberration
  • Balanced proprietary low-impedance igniter circuit incorporated inside the lamphouse for low interference emissions at switch-on
  • Optosource lamp housings use a dielectric-coated ellipsoid optimised for peak reflectance between 300nm and 500nm (other coatings are available to order)
  • Couplings to all popular fluorescence microscopy

Lamphouse Options
The Optosource lamp house is specifically optimised for use with our Optoscan monochromator, but is ideal for any application which requires ultra-high point intensity e.g. Fluorescence microscopy. It uses a large dielectric coated ellipsoidal mirror to concentrate the energy from the lamp onto a very small point. The vertical lamp mount makes it suitable for use with a range of xenon, mercury and xenon/mercury lamps.
Optical alignment (often a problem with arc-lamp housings) is achieved by a very simple arrangement of three screws for horizontal, vertical and focus adjustment. The lamphouse is also provided with an enclosed focussing screen for safe and easy set up and trouble-shooting.
Our classic lamp house, with its horizontal lamp mounting is highly efficient at focussing the energy from a 75 Watt lamp onto a small spot. The magnification of the bright spot of the arc is greater than with the more expensive Optosource, but this is not a disadvantage for systems which use optical filters and larger sizes of liquid light guide (typically 5mm). It is also an economical choice for monochromator systems where the application is not light limited.
Light Source Configurations
To ensure that our customers have no problems getting started with their Cairn light sources we configure and test them with the specific make and model of lamp that the researcher intends to use. If switching to another lamp at a later date it may be necessary to change electrode holders and / or power settings.
