Some researchers require flash pulses to be optically coupled to the preparation using a dedicated silica lens system. This allows the magnification to be determined to suit the application and doesn't rely on a microscope epifluorescence port. Whilst this is sometimes necessary we would stress that microscope objectives are exceptionally good condensers so discrete lens systems are only recommended when epifluorescence is not practicable or a large area of photolysis is required.
