The Cairn Optoflash Photolysis System combines continuously variable voltage, with a switchable bank of capacitors for generating high-energy pulses for the photolytic release of caged compounds. The system is typically used in conjunction with fluorescence or electrophysiological recording to study the kinetics of ion concentration in living cells. Using the latest capacitor technology, and our proprietary igniter design, incorporated into the lamp housing, the Cairn system is compact, flexible and causes relatively little electrical interference. By allowing the user to select both voltage and capacitance; the intensity, duration, and recharge rate of flashes can be controlled. As with our continuous arc light sources, the control unit can be supplied with a choice of lamp housings for direct illumination; or, more usually, coupling via a liquid light guide. For the latter there is a choice of our classic (horizontal mount) lamphouse or the Optosource (vertical mount) housing for even higher point intensity.
In most cases the Optoflash unit is supplied with a broadband UV filter, liquid light guide and dual port microscope coupling so that photolysis can be used in conjunction with conventional epifluorescence ion concentration measurements. Another commonly requested option is to have an independent movable field aperture in the flash light path so that only a sub-region of the field of view is photolysed. For details of both these components please refer to the microscope coupling section of this website.
